Unity, resilience, connectedness — these words are woven into the cultural fabric of Northeast Park Hill.At one point in time, Northeast Park Hill embodied Denver’s vision of a vibrant and flourishing community. It thrived with Black-owned businesses, bustling fresh food markets, and reliable infrastructure. It was a place where the community had ownership and where residents took pride in calling it “home.”As such, the City of Denver recognized the community’s potential and invested funds to support its aspirations. Northeast Park Hill not only survived, it flourished.Unfortunately, during the last five decades, Northeast Park Hill, like many urban neighborhoods across the country, has been subject to institutional practices that perpetuate social inequities, rendering it a forgotten community.Businesses have divested or been pushed out of the neighborhood. The King Soopers in Northeast Park Hill — once Colorado’s largest food market —...Letters: Polis was wrong to veto wolf reintroduction policies

Polis wrong to veto legislators’ attempt to tame wolf reintroductionRe: “Polis vetoes bill that would have delayed wolf releases,” May 17 news storyGov. Jared Polis’ veto of Senate Bill 23-256 is irresponsible. Polis says he respects Colorado wildlife and our state’s rural ranching and agriculture legacies, but with this veto he missed a key opportunity to demonstrate that support. Colorado legislators overwhelmingly approved the bill so the state could proceed responsibly with the challenging task of gray wolf reintegration. In vetoing, Polis hid behind Colorado voters. Yes, in 2020 voters approved this reintegration, but it’s clear to me most Eastern Slope voters do not clearly understand what effect that decision will have on our state’s wildlife resources and our ranching communities. Obviously, legislators are informed, but Polis just sidestepped his chance to step up.I grew up in Grand Junction and I embrace those ranching and agriculture cultures. Julia Wolfe never thought she’d write an oratorio about women’s suffrage. In fact, when she first considered it, she found the subject daunting.“It’s such a long history, such a big story,” Wolfe said in a recent phone call from New York.A few years back, though, she was asked to compose a new piece on the subject — and suddenly knew that she wanted to do it.Now “Her Story,” Wolfe’s 40-minute work for orchestra and women’s chorus, comes to the Bay Area. Composed on commission for the San Francisco Symphony and four additional orchestras, the work, which has been performed in Nashville, Chicago, and Boston, makes its West Coast premiere on a San Francisco Symphony program May 25 and 27, conducted by Giancarlo Guerrero and featuring the Boston-based women’s chamber chorus Lorelei Ensemble. The program also includes Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Scheherazade.”Composer Julia Wolfe’s oratorio, “Her Story,” is inspired by the women’s suffragette movement. By Jennifer Sinco Kelleher | Associated PressHONOLULU — President Joe Biden approved an emergency declaration as an intensifying Super Typhoon Mawar approached Guam, where anyone not living in a concrete house was urged to seek safety elsewhere and emergency shelters began to fill ahead of what could be the most powerful storm to hit the U.S. Pacific territory in two decades.Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero said on social media that the declaration will support the mobilization of resources into Guam, which is “especially crucial given our distance from the continental U.S.” Guerrero ordered residents of coastal, low-lying and flood-prone areas of the territory of over 150,000 people to evacuate to higher elevations.Federal assistance will be needed to save lives and property and “mitigate the effects of this imminent catastrophe,” Guerrero said in a letter to the president requesting a “pre-landfall emergency” for Guam. Will a stern warning from the judge in his Manhattan criminal case? That’s the question looming over a hybrid hearing Tuesday where the former president is set to be instructed on new rules barring him from using evidence in the hush-money case to attack witnesses who could testify against him.Trump won’t have to show up to court for the afternoon hearing at a Manhattan courthouse, avoiding the mammoth security and logistical challenges that accompanied his arraignment last month.Instead, the Republican will be connected by video conference, with his face beamed onto courtroom TV monitors. His lawyers and prosecutors must still appear in person. The hearing comes a day after the plaintiff in the defamation case, writer E.
