A team of local researchers is keeping a close eye on the dozens of endangered Right Whales in Cape Cod Bay to keep them safe from collisions with boaters and entanglements.Sky7HD was flying over the bay on Friday and spotted a pod of dozens of whales. Also hovering over the whales was a team from the Center for Coastal Studies.Of the number of whales, Scott Landry said, “Our aerial survey team was just up recently and last I heard they were up to 40 individuals, but they still hadn’t seen the whole bay, so likely a lot more.” And with less than 340 Right Whales left, experts are keeping a close eye on the ones here. On Wednesday, a whale became entangled on hundreds of feet of fishing rope. The team removed about 200 feet of fishing gear from her entanglement, Landry said. Now the bay is being patrolled to prevent boats from getting too close or going too fast. The entangled whale will remain monitored in the hopes of being fully freed.Tornadoes spawned by huge system pulverize homes; 3 dead

By ANDREW DeMILLO (Associated Press)LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — A monster storm system tore through the South and Midwest on Friday, spawning deadly tornadoes that shredded homes and shopping centers, overturned vehicles and uprooted trees as people raced for shelter. At least one person was killed and two dozen or more were hurt, some critically, in the Little Rock area, authorities said. The town of Wynne in northeastern Arkansas was also devastated, and officials reported two dead there, along with destroyed homes and people trapped in the debris. There were more confirmed twisters in Iowa, damaging hail fell in Illinois and wind-whipped grass fires blazed in Oklahoma, as the storm system threatened a broad swath of the country home to some 85 million people. The destructive weather came as President Joe Biden toured the aftermath of a deadly tornado that struck in Mississippi one week ago and promised the government would help the area recover. MIAMI — Jorge Soler’s solo home run off left-hander David Peterson in the second inning was all the Miami Marlins needed to defeat the Mets and even up the season-opening series 1-1.The Mets lost 2-1 on Friday night at LoanDepot park, failing to get the big hit they needed. Peterson (0-1) made his first start of the season and had some mixed results, allowing only one run on eight hits, walking one and striking out five over five innings. Peterson was the lucky recipient of some excellent defense behind him and also effectively pitched himself out of a few jams.Left-hander Jesus Luzardo (1-0) flummoxed the Mets through 5 2/3 innings, allowing only two hits, striking out five and walking four. Luzardo didn’t allow a base runner until the fourth inning and it looked as though the walks were going to haunt him in the sixth, but the Miami bullpen did its job to secure the win.Jazz Chisholm Jr. homered off John Curtiss to put the Mets down 2-0 in the ninth, pushing the ...Zach LaVine finds his way to the rim once again as he leads Chicago Bulls’ postseason push: ‘I’m able to do everything I need to’

Few forces are strong enough to withstand the momentum of Zach LaVine when he picks up steam on the way to the basket. It could be easy for the casual viewer to sum up LaVine’s scoring around the basket as an act of pure physicality. But once he’s in the air, LaVine’s finishing is elevated to something close to an art form — cradle the ball from his fingertips to his palm, tug it right, skip it left, flip it upward off the glass, crush it down past the rim. This isn’t new for LaVine, but the creative element was missing from his game in the early months of the season. It took until December for LaVine to feel like himself after an offseason left knee surgery. In the last two months, his bounce has returned with a vengeance — and might have brought with it the best version of LaVine yet.“It pretty much opened up my whole game,” LaVine told the Tribune. “I’m able to do everything I need to.”LaVine and the Bulls entered the...4.2-magnitude earthquake shakes parts of San Diego County
