Denver is not moving forward with plans to hire a private security company to take over the city’s migrant sheltering efforts, Mayor Michael Hancock’s office announced Thursday, less than two weeks after backlash began over the proposed $40 million contract. The Denver City Council was scheduled to vote on the contract with GardaWorld Federal Services on Monday. However, after nonprofit leaders met with city staff and company representatives Wednesday, they said their concerns only grew about the international company’s history of alleged abuses and mistreatment, as well as its lack of experience in sheltering migrants. In a written statement, the outgoing mayor’s office stated that it had hoped to finish negotiations, community engagement and get council approval prior to the new administration taking over, but there’s more work to be done.“With more than 500 Central and South American refugees, asylum-seekers and migrants still in our care, we con...

The announcement came a week after police said they found Farias after receiving a call about a person lying on the ground in front of a southeast Houston church.Authorities had not previously said where Farias, now 25, spent the eight years since he was reported missing after taking his two dogs for a walk near his family’s home in northeast Houston. He was hospitalized after police found him last week and detectives interviewed him and his mother on Wednesday.“After investigators talked with him yesterday, it was discovered that Rudy returned home the following day on March 8, 2015," Lt. ICEExtract: The Hash Hardware King

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 04:06:01 GMT

There are few people on the planet that love hash as much as Ashley Gaetrig, co-founder of one of the top hardware companies in solventless hash, IceExtract.I’ve had the pleasure of judging solventless at The Emerald Cup with Gaetrig for the last couple of years. It’s easy to presume she brings the same focus levels to all her work as she does judging the world’s best hash.Much of the time over the years she made the hash she was smoking alongside her husband Eric. She emphasized it’s a shared journey. The affection for hash she shares with him proved a major catalyst for where their lives ended up. The pair started growing in Michigan for personal use 20 years ago. Eventually, the medical laws passed and they decided to take it to the next level as caregivers.“Then we got some patients and we were growing the weed for them and basically charging them really cheap prices, $100 an ounce,” Ashley told L.A. Weekly. “That was on top of what we gave to them for free. And then they were b...

SAN JOSE – The main part of practice was over but winger Kasper Halttunen stayed on the ice for some extra instruction, doing drills with three former NHL players-turned-coaches on what was the second day of the Sharks development camp.Several minutes after he left the ice, Halttunen, taken by the Sharks in the second round of the NHL Draft last week, still couldn’t quite believe one of those coaches was the league’s all-time leader in games played, Patrick Marleau.“When I was a kid, I watched him play on TV,” the 18-year-old Halttunen said of Marleau on Wednesday at Sharks Ice. “Of course, he is one of the biggest icons who has ever played this game. It was kind of a dream come true to work with him. It was awesome.”Marleau was back on that familiar sheet of ice this week, the one he practiced on for over 20 years as he became the Sharks’ all-time leader in games played, goals, and points. But instead of wearing shoulder pads Marleau, 43, was wearing a black tracksuit and a teal ca...
